Before employing any tradesperson!

Following this simple advice could save you a lot of time, money and stress.

• Be clear about what you want done.
• Don't use people who knock on your door.
• Ask for references. Any decent professional will be perfectly happy to supply these. Make sure you follow them up by giving them a call. Depending on the job, you can even ask to come and have a look at the work.
• Get more than one quote. If possible get at least three. The quotes should be on headed paper and include their contact details, a description of the work that will be carried out, how long it will take and what it will cost including VAT if any. Be wary of "cash jobs”.
• Ask what guarantees and assurances you have if anything goes wrong. Will they come back and fix it?
• Liability insurance. Ask to see a copy of their liability insurance. A good professional will be covered against accidental damage to your property.
• Agree the job in writing, make sure the description of the job is what you want done, how long it will take and the price is what you agreed.
• Ask for a business card. It should have all their contact details. It's also useful if you want to recommend a good professional to a neighbour or colleague.
• Ask when they can start. Good professionals are usually very busy so be wary of people who can do the job tomorrow!
• Don’t just go with the cheapest, consider your ability to communicate with the tradesman and the quality of their work
