So, you have a bay window that is in dire need of some curtains? Not just picking out the fabric, there are other factors to consider. Including how to measure curtains for a bay window. Find out the basic steps from a professional team of curtain fitters here.
The first step is to find where your curtains will hang and measure the number of sides your bay window has. Typically, this is either 3 or 5 (depending on how big the area is), but it can also be 2 or 7.
Measuring the Window
As can be suggested with the title “how to measure curtains for a bay window”, there is a fair share of finding lengths and widths of particular aspects. Firstly, measure the distance between the top of the window and the ceiling; this will see if there is enough room to attach wall brackets (a minimum of 10cm) or if they need to be top fixed into the ceiling.
Then, the first side of your bay, where the pole is to be installed, should be measured all the way up to where it meets the angle of the following portion of your bay. To allow the pole to pass the window along the wall and your curtains to be pushed past the window when opened, allow an additional 15 cm along this side. Continue measuring each side of the window bay and total up the lengths.
Determine the Length and Width
Before you understand how to measure curtains for a bay window, it is important to fully know what drop (how long) and the width you want your curtains. Would you prefer your curtain to hang just below the window’s frame? Or, are you wanting them full length, laying gently on the floor? For the drop, start by positioning your tape at the point where you want the top of your curtains to sit and pulling it down until it reaches the desired length.
Now, onto the width. The best way to determine the width of bay window curtains is to measure each piece separately. If there is a curtain pole or track in place, measure around the entire length (excluding any decorative ends). If there is no track or pole, then start from a point approximately 15-20cm before the first window and measure up to the first angle. Then measure from the first angle to the second and so on around the bay. Don’t forget to go past the last window at the same distance you allowed before the first. Add all these up and this will be the curtain width.
Curtain Poles or Bay Curtain Tracks
There is a wide range of factors that can determine whether you decide curtain poles or tracks are your preference. Using curtain poles will enable you to make a bigger and more striking statement. Choose from a variety of types and finishes.
On the other hand, bay curtain tracks are less noticeable than curtain poles. Tracks are ideal if you are wanting to do something more plain and subtle, rather than making a bold statement. Perfect for a minimalist approach.
Measuring your bay window for curtain tracks or poles can be very complex and error-prone. This is an area that is often best left to professional curtain fitters.
Our Curtain Fitting Service
Whilst you are taking curtain measurements, use a metal tape measure, not a fabric one as they may stretch and ensure that the tape measure stays level. These measurements need to be accurate so that installation goes smoothly. If these are not correctly undertaken, future problems may occur and may cost you more money for replacements.
