So, you’ve decided to include a curtain pole in your interior? From their invention in the late 1800s, curtain poles have been a popular and trendy choice for homes across the UK, even in modern times. But, what should homeowners consider about curtain pole fittings before installation? Find out more here from a team of curtain fitters.

Curtain Pole or Curtain Tracks?

Before installation, it is important to decide what type will benefit your home and be the most functional. Curtain tracks offer a more discrete and contemporary alternative to curtain poles. So, if you do not want your curtains to be the main feature of a room, tracks may be for you. Find out more about curtain tracks fittings here on our previous blog.

However, the most popular choice is primarily curtain poles. Both styles come in a variety of colours, materials and overall designs. But, curtain poles tend to stand out more for interiors. If you are unsure, talk with your local curtain fitters to get expert advice before deciding.

Length of Pole

When it comes to curtain pole fittings, it all depends on possible obstructions and size around the window area.

However, as a general rule, the pole should protrude on each side by about 15-20cm (6-8in) beyond the window recess. In relation to the window opening, it ought to be fitted symmetrically.

Where to Position the Pole

Normally, curtain poles are positioned around 15cm above the window opening. Although occasionally adjustments are necessary if there is not enough room or if the coving is in the way. For curtain pole fittings, you must set the pole at the proper height above the floor. But, where should you position it?

Firstly, mark the locations on the wall with a pencil after accurately measuring. If the curtains are eyelet headings, ensure extra care is taken when measuring, as there is no other way to change the curtain’s height. Getting the correct height for your curtain pole can be a complex process and is a job best left to the professionals.

Even if the top of the window or the ceiling looks level and horizontal, always use a spirit level to position the pole during curtain pole fittings. Also, to ensure all brackets are aligned, consider using tools such as a laser level.

How to Put Up a Curtain Pole

Once measurements have been completed, it is time to fix the brackets and add the curtain pole. At each position you have marked, drill a hole for your brackets. Your instructions will specify the width of the drill bit you need. Use the right bit for the sort of material you are drilling into. Always check to ensure there are no hidden wires or pipes in the area you are drilling into.

Add the wall plugs, which are typically included with curtain pole fitting packages. Then, screw your brackets into place.

Now that your pole is attached to the brackets, you can position it there and secure it using a screwdriver.

Why Does My Curtain Pole Keep Falling Down?

The curtains should remain upright and straight as they were with the installation. However, there are a number of factors that could lead to the curtains sagging in the middle. For example, the curtain material may be too heavy for the particular pole. Or, the curtains are too long and on the floor, dragging them away from the pole.

But, what can you do in this situation? Though DIY curtain pole fittings will save homeowners money, this is irrelevant if there are long-term costs with future curtain modifications. That’s why it is vitally important that these fittings are professionally installed and completed, as experts will understand the ideal lengths and weight that the curtains should be.
