Curtains can become a starring feature of any room; acting as either a barrier to prevent the sun from coming in or lighting up a room. But, as there are so many different styles and choices of fabrics, there are certain aspects that need to be considered during curtain installations. Find out more here from a professional team of curtain fitters.

Think About the Room Specifications

Before curtain installations, it is important to assess where you are wanting them and what function they will serve. You are wanting something that will welcome not just yourself after a hard day at the office, but your guests as well.

For example, your living room will serve a completely different function from your bedroom. In the living room, when there is a large French window, you might prefer a light material. Compared to in bedrooms, where a dark ambience is important to help with sleep.

Length and Lining

Consider how high above the window you are wanting your curtains to start before selecting your fabric. Certain curtains can give small rooms a heightened feeling. So it’s important to find the right materials. Typically, curtain installations and designers will place curtains six inches above the window frame. However, if you are wanting a dramatic effect, you may want to hang them higher.

Measure the distance from the top of the window to the floor. You should lengthen your curtain by two or three inches if you prefer a more classic appearance with the drape slightly pooled on the floor. For more information, read our previous blog.

Colour and Fabric

Over time, unlined curtains will fade, especially if they are at a window that receives direct sunlight. So, it all depends on your colour palette. For example, neutral colours go nicely with most interior designs and fade the least. Whilst vibrant and bright colours frequently fade more quickly.

For curtain installation, why not personalise and modernise your fabric? Instead of choosing bold and loud patterns or prints, add a contrasting border to the inside edge of the curtain. Once you have tiebacks and blinds that coordinate, you can complete the window treatment.

Your choice of fabric can determine the style and functionality of your curtains. The classic and aesthetically pleasing drape provided by heavy fabrics like linen, velvet and faux silk, is frequently utilised in living rooms and bedrooms. Or, for more practical options, blends of cotton and synthetic materials are simple to clean.

How to Save Money

The choice of fabric can also affect certain long-term costs. For example, most likely, the curtains will be the main feature in living rooms, where the sunlight will shine through the day. However, this can lead to certain damaging assets. The sun’s powerful UV rays, without proper protection, can damage the material on furnishings and other interior decorations. When considering curtain installations, think about selecting fabrics such as polyester, nylon and wool, which can effectively block the UV rays. This will help save money on replacing any damaged items.

By choosing curtains with a heavy lining, homeowners can also cut down on energy bills. These curtains can help reflect the light and either keep the heat inside during the colder months or prevent the room from heating up during summer.
